Freelance Editing

Wed Jun 3, 2009, 1:40 PM

I'm an amateur freelance fiction editor with a fair bit of experience, mostly with the underexperienced writers close to my age. I enjoy teaching as well as the actual editing, so I am happy to edit for the newest beginners as well as the more advanced writers (most of whom usually don't ask me anyway).

My strength is fiction, and my passions lean towards fantasy and sci-fi. I can try my hand at nonfiction and poetry, but my results are more varied.

When I edit a story, I mark grammar errors and comment on places I would change. I also provide you with a critique, which includes things you did well, things you could improve, and my suggestions overall. The length of the critique usually depends on the length of the piece. And then we discuss!

Since we're online, it's hard to do the traditional face-to-face discussion that is the ideal way to go over a story that you're concerned about. In place of this, I use a combination of email, email attachments, dA notes (less preferable), instant messages, and the dA chat system. I don't do phone calls or voice chats, sorry. If by chance you are a Harvard University student or live in the area, I'm happy to meet you in a coffee shop or similar location.

Do not send me submissions by note or email without reading the instructions below. I will delete them and ignore you if you do it more than once.

What We Discuss

It's your story, so what we discuss is primarily up to you. I'm not going to trash you or your story, but I'm also not here to boost your ego. If that's all you're looking for, go find a friend or a family member.

Writers are often concerned about the following areas, so I figured I might as well write them out so you can reference them if you choose.

Story Basics:

Never written a story before? Written too many to count, but just can't get this one to feel right? We can discuss the basics behind the story: characters, setting, plot, etc. This can take place whether you know how your story goes or if you just have a random idea that you want to try and turn into a story.

Grammar Help:

My grammar is as flawless as I can make it, and I have the official reference books to back it up. If you're unsure of something, ask. There are a lot of peculiar things in the English language, most of which don't make sense - you just have to learn them.

English as a Foreign Language:

I don't speak another language fluently enough to translate a story into English, or to discuss it with you in another language. That said, I know English grammar and the grammar of the several languages I've studied in the past (French, Italian, Russian) very well. If you can speak English well enough to talk with me and try to write a story, I should be able to help.

Rules and Regs

Editing services are free for dA members. However, I'm doing this around a job and college, so I can't promise to be able to return your story to you immediately. I will keep a list of the projects I have received on this page so you have some idea of how quickly I will be able to get to your story. Until I know how popular this is going to turn out, I'm going to be limiting writers to five projects with me.

  1. I reserve the right to refuse submissions. I try not to, but it happens.

  2. You need to speak English well enough to communicate with me.

  3. You must be able to send me a document electronically, with page numbers for reference. (NO submissions by note here on deviantART.)

  4. Time limits are NOT OK without discussing in detail with me first. Assume the answer is NO. I will return things as fast as I am able.

  5. I will not write your story for you. Come with questions, not looking to drag ideas out of me.

  6. Based on the amount of work I do for you, I expect to be acknowledged. It doesn't have to be huge, but it must be there.

  7. We make an agreement about how far we're going to go together, and then stick to it. No last minute additions of "Oh, one more thing".

  8. Plagarism of any kind nullifies any agreements we make and I will contact dA staff. It's illegal and possibly the highest crime against the creative minds here on this site.

Submission

Please send me a note with a distinctive title so I see it in my junky inbox. Summarize your idea or story in a sentence or two, and tell me what you would be looking for from me.

I'll send you a reply giving you an estimate of when I would be able to start looking at your project, how long it would probably take me, what would be involved, and what I would need from you. Then at the bottom I'd give you my email address (and whatever information I might need in addition) so you can email me the file if you accept the terms of my agreement.

All submissions need to be typed, double-spaced, with page numbers. This is industry standard for a reason... it's the easiest to read and make notes on. I don't always print things and mark by hand, but sometimes I do. If you want me to read something you've submitted to deviantART, I'm going to ask you to submit it to me in another format so that we have the same page numbers to refer to when we discuss your story.

Do not send me submissions by note or email without sending me this summary note first. I will delete them and ignore you if you do it more than once.
